I am not a parent...yet. But, I hope to be soon. I work as a low-bono attorney at the D.C. Tenants' Rights Center. We are a private law firm providing affordable legal services to tenants in DC. We are small. And since we don't charge much (in an effort to increase access to justice), we don't make much. My boss has two kids. He's very kind and family-friendly, but the money isn't there to pay me for maternity leave. As you can imagine, 3 months of no pay right as we're starting a family would be financially harmful. Needless to say, my family and my workplace would benefit from this bill. My workplace because it would reduce the risk of me leaving. My family because it would allow me to stay home for first few months of our newest members life without worrying about the financially harmful results.
