DC Paid Leave Campaign Supports Expanded Access ...

The DC Paid Leave Campaign, representing a diverse coalition of local businesses, community institutions, service providers, and advocacy organizations, strongly supports Councilmember Elissa Silverman’s “Universal Paid Leave Portability Amendment Act of 2022” (B24-0661), which would expand access to DC’s Paid Family Leave program for working families who have already earned paid leave, but who are in between jobs when they need to access that leave. This legislation is cosponsored by Councilmembers Christina Henderson, Robert White, Brianne Nadeau, Brooke Pinto, Mary Cheh, Janeese Lewis George, Charles Allen, and Trayon White.

Media Roundup: Paid Family Leave Bill Introduction

Yesterday, seven District of Columbia Councilmembers joined together to introduce the Universal Paid Leave Act of 2015, which would provide family and medical leave for everyone who lives or works in the District.

The program, championed by DC's At-Large Councilmembers David Grosso and Elissa Silverman, would allow working Washingtonians to take up to 16 weeks of paid leave to care for a new child, an ailing family member, or a personal illness.

If the bill is successful, DC will be the first city in the nation to provide family and medical leave for all. It's a fact that local and national media couldn't ignore. Here is just some of the coverage the introduction of this landmark legislation received:

 

The Washington Post Agrees: DC Needs Paid Family Leave!

Aaron Davis of the Washington Post writes, "The District would become the most generous place in the country for a worker to take time off after giving birth or to care for a dying parent under a measure supported by a majority of the D.C. Council."

Business School Faculty say: Paid Family Leave works!

Business School Faculty from all over the country wrote a letter to Congress expressing their support for Paid Family Leave. They know that Paid Family Leave is beneficial for both businesses and people - it's a win-win.

"We, the undersigned 203 business school faculty members from 88 institutions across the country, write this letter in support of making paid family and medical leave available to all working families.* Sound business practices, data from other countries, our own research with employers, employees and organizations, and our experiences teaching the business leaders of tomorrow compel our conclusion that the United States must adopt a national paid family and medical leave policy. "
