Paid family leave is essential for community health. I supported an earlier bill [for Paid Sick Days] but appreciated it even more when I underwent 4 surgeries in 2 years. I work at a university with a free short term disability plan so I received full salary for months of recovery. I didn't have to worry about losing my job or health insurance, and had enough time and peace of mind to get stronger. All workers should be able to care for themselves and their families without risking their jobs. We are the ones who make these companies rich. Because so many uncovered people are Black or Latino, this policy alleviates some of the racist practices on our jobs. Staying home sick protects our co-workers and the public from the flu and other conditions, and creates a safer work place.
